SEOUL, Jan. 31 (Korea Bizwire) — The justice ministry said Thursday that it has decided to strictly control parole for habitual drunk drivers, scammers and sex offenders in future.
“We’ve decided to limit parole, in principle, for offenders who repeatedly commit (offences of) drunk driving, fraud, sexual abuse and family violence in a bid to contain the occurrence of such crimes and raise people’s awareness,” the ministry said.
Under the current criminal law, prisoners can be paroled after they serve one-third of their prison sentences.
However, parole will be severely limited from now on for inmates who have seriously injured or killed people through habitual drunk driving, harmed many victims via pyramid marketing or done extensive mental harm to people by disseminating pornographic videos, the ministry said.
