SEOUL, April 14 (Korea Bizwire) — The amount of pesticides sprayed by golf courses in South Korea to manage their greens and fairways has been on an upward trend.
According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Environment, the nation’s 545 golf courses used 213 tons of pesticides in 2021, up 5.4 percent from a year earlier.
The amount of pesticide used per hectare of golf course was estimated at 7.19 kilograms in 2021, up 4.8 percent from 2020 and up 21 percent from 2019.
The golf course with the highest usage of pesticide per hectare was the Oceano Golf Club in Haenam, South Jeolla Province with 45.9 kilograms.
Three out of the top five golf courses in terms of the usage of pesticides were included in the top five list in 2020.
The aggregate size of golf courses in Korea is equivalent to the area covered by the city of Iksan in North Jeolla Province, and 84 percent of Seoul’s area.
