SEOUL, Dec. 13 (Korea Bizwire)Amid disruptions to mobile networks during large-scale protests calling for the impeachment of the president, older smartphones equipped with terrestrial DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) technology have become unexpectedly essential.

The technology, which allows users to watch live broadcasts without relying on mobile networks, is gaining renewed attention for its reliability in emergencies.

DMB: A Forgotten Feature Revisited

DMB technology, commonly found in Android smartphones released before 2020, operates via radio waves received through an antenna rather than cellular networks. This independence from network infrastructure has made it invaluable during events like protests, where overloaded networks often lead to communication blackouts.

Reports on online forums describe protest attendees using DMB-enabled smartphones to access live updates and broadcasts during network outages. “If you have a phone from before 2018 or 2019, take it with you to protests,” one user advised, highlighting the practical utility of DMB.

Renewed Interest in Practical Technology

As streaming services like YouTube and OTT platforms replaced traditional broadcast methods, manufacturers excluded DMB from newer devices. However, the protests have sparked a re-evaluation of the feature’s practical benefits. Users also recommend carrying wired earphones, which can double as antennas for DMB on older devices or FM radio on newer smartphones.

Another attendee recounted, “I saw people watching TV at the protest, and it turned out they were using Galaxy smartphones from before 2018.”

Alternatives for Newer Smartphones

For users of modern devices without DMB, FM radio provides a viable alternative. Like DMB, FM radio is unaffected by cellular network disruptions and can provide critical information during large-scale events.

Broader Implications

The resurgence of interest in DMB underscores the enduring value of simple, robust technologies in situations where modern systems falter. As network reliability becomes increasingly critical in emergencies, these older functionalities remind us of the need for diverse communication tools.
