DAEJEON, Aug. 28 (Korea Bizwire)– A Korean research company has succeeded in developing Layered Division Multiplexing(LDM) technology that can broadcast Ultra High Definition(UHD) and mobile High Definition(HD) quality programs at the same time.
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute(ETRI) announced that it has developed the next free network broadcasting system with ‘Clever Logic’, and succeeded in a field demonstration with Jeju Technopark.
The new technology, which is based on LDM technology, provides 4K UHD quality and mobile HD quality broadcasting through one channel, with one transmitter.
LDM technology transmits more than 2 broadcasting signals at different power hierarchies. Through the use of this technology, UHD TV and mobile HDTV broadcasts can be transmitted through one channel.
The research team explained that the use of the new technology could lead to reduced transmission costs, and a more efficient use of frequency resources.
The ETRI tested the technology with Jeju KBS, sending out programs at UHD and mobile HD quality through one channel. They confirmed that the reception was good indoors as well as during travel outdoors.
The ETRI revealed that the technology was selected as the baseline technology for ATSC(Advanced Television System Committee) 3.0 in February. If ATSC 3.0 and its LDM technology is selected as a global standard, the ETRI is expected to benefit from development fees, and have the upper hand in the early stages of the ATSC 3.0 market.
Officials at ETRI also expressed their ambitions for the new technology. “We are planning to suggest the technology to the European broadcasting standards as well. Through our expertise, we plan to cast more influence on the global broadcasting market.”
