MEXICO CITY, March 15 (Korea Bizwire) — The South Korean Embassy in Mexico City said Wednesday it has issued a warning to businesses operating in the country to be on guard against email hacking, saying a couple of companies have fallen victim to this kind of attack.
An unidentified suspect has hacked emails of the South Korean companies and opened bank accounts using the information of these companies and their clients before demanding they send money to false accounts, an embassy official said.
The unsuspecting businesses, not knowing of the hacking, sent money as requested only to find out that they had been scammed. The accounts were closed immediately after the suspect withdrew the money.
Mexican law enforcement authorities and banks involved said they will launch a probe into the incident once the victims lodge a complaint.
“South Korean companies doing business with foreign firms need to enhance security of their communication with their clients,” the official said. “Companies should, moreover, check in-person the recipients before sending any money if the bank’s address is located in different countries from the places where the client is based.”
