SEOUL, Oct. 18(Korea Bizwire) – Thanks to a newly devised positioning technology, people in a disaster situation can now have more chances to be rescued. Samsung Electronics and KT, Korea’s largest telecom corporation, announced on October 16 that they jointly developed a Device-to-device Discovery technology to rescue people in severe trouble.
The brand-new positioning service enables a device equipped with the technology to keep track of another device’s location within the radius of 500 meters by using LTE frequencies. The app service is designed to let the user know how close the counterpart is by activating alarms on smartphones.
The technology is expected to assist rescues in places such as indoor areas and mountain valleys where the GPS system is not available. Both corporations also plans to develop additional technologies including a D2D Discovery-based remote controlling system and a streamlined positioning service in preparation for the state’s project to build up a communications network in national disasters.
“It is not easy to predict how the communications environment works in a disaster. Therefore, the D2D Discovery technology is expected to play an important role in the situation,” said an official of KT.
