SEOUL, March 22 (Korea Bizwire) — Samsung Electronics has installed 68 floor tiles that generate electricity when they’re walked on at Sandton City, a shopping center located in Sandton, Johannesburg.
The power generated by the tiles from March 7 to 19 was 180kW, which corresponds to the amount of electricity needed to power a typical Korean house for two weeks. Samsung Electronics donated the generated electricity to Diepsloot, one of the most poverty-stricken districts in Johannesburg. The company also donated Samsung solar power generators to the district’s Sunrise Middle School.
The energy-generating tiles have been installed as part of the ‘What If I Can?’ campaign to promote Samsung’s commitment to building a better society by introducing small-but-important measures that individuals can take to contribute to change.
Samsung Electronics said that the company would expand the electricity donation program further by establishing solar-powered technology-rich schools, called ‘Internet Schools,’ in three African countries.
Individuals around the world can also participate in donating electricity by downloading the ‘What If I Can’ step-counting app through Google Play, and walking with their smartphone on. Samsung Electronics will donate a solar generator for every 400 million steps counted.
