SEJONG, Nov. 3 (Korea Bizwire) — The coronavirus pandemic has stimulated demand for public bicycles in the administrative city of Sejong.
As of last month, some 1.03 million people had used public bicycles in Sejong thus far this year, the city revealed Monday.
The number of people using public bicycles in the city has jumped by 76.7 percent over the past year. The growing trend is expected to continue to the end of this year.
Experts argue that growing demand for contactless means of transportation following the coronavirus outbreak has led to an increasing number of people using public bicycles.
In response to public complaints, the city has introduced lighter models, extended operating hours and installed additional rental stations, which have also contributed to the increased bike use.
“Bicycles account for 3.1 percent of the entire means of transportation available in the heart of the city, which is far higher than any other neighboring cities or provinces,” said Lee Sang-ok, head of transportation at Sejong.
