SEOUL, May 22 (Korea Bizwire) – In an effort to curb carbon emissions through everyday actions against climate change, Songpa District in the South Korean capital will hold a contest for apartment complexes to reduce food waste from June through October, officials announced on May 21.

The competition aims to encourage residents of larger residential buildings, which account for 45 percent of the district’s food waste, to cut back on discarding edible food scraps.

In last year’s contest, apartments achieved a 3.89 percent reduction in food waste compared with the previous year, outpacing the 3 percent decrease among single-family households.

This year, 124 apartment complexes in Songpa with 150 or more households that use electronic weighing bins for food waste will be divided into four groups based on size.

Total food waste volumes from May through October will be measured against the prior year, with awards going to the 12 complexes with the highest reduction rates and lowest per-household averages.

Winning complexes will receive plaques recognizing their achievements, and officials plan to support replacements for outdated or broken weighing bins used to monitor food waste levels.

“Through this contest, we expect to catalyze residents’ active participation in reducing food waste, thereby lowering disposal costs and contributing to environmental protection through reduced greenhouse gas emissions,” said Seo Kang-seok, the mayor of Songpa district.
