SEOUL, Sept. 20 (Korea Bizwire) – South Korean Internet service provider SK Broadband announced on Tuesday its intention to enhance program competitiveness by integrating AI technology into its local channel news.
SK Broadband plans to broadcast by creating an AI version of journalist Shim Jae-ho, who is nearing retirement after more than 30 years as a news anchor, engaging with and meeting local citizens.
Shim said, “I’m delighted that even after retirement, I will continue to communicate with local citizens as ‘AI Shim Jae-ho.”
Furthermore, SK Broadband aims to implement image generation-type AI technology for the data screens of news programs airing on local community channels by the end of this year.
When given inputs such as ‘climate crisis’ and ‘policy discussion,’ the system will generate images, including virtual figures engaging in discussions about climate responses, all within 30 seconds.
SK Broadband said that the image generation AI technology, developed in collaboration with SK Telecom, will streamline the production process, reducing the time and expenses required for computer graphics. This will enable the company to focus its resources on programs that can significantly enhance viewer satisfaction.
Kim Hyuk, head of SK Broadband’s cable broadcasting business division, said, “In collaboration with SK Telecom’s media R&D organization, we plan to leverage AI technology in various aspects of news production. By advancing AI technology, we aim to bolster the competitiveness of community channels and elevate viewer satisfaction.”
