SEOUL, June 1 (Korea Bizwire)SK E&S Co., the energy unit of South Korean conglomerate SK Group, has teamed up with U.S-based hydrogen fuel cell maker Plug Power Inc. to supply clean, green hydrogen.

SK Plug Hyverses, a joint venture between the two companies, said Tuesday it inked a deal with South Korea’s state-run gas company Korea Gas Corp. to supply a 1-megawatt (MW)-class polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) water electrolysis facility that extracts hydrogen by electrolyzing the water.

The PEM water electrolysis facility will be used for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s state project to develop and verify the hydrogen and battery storage system using renewable energy-connected green hydrogen production technology.

It will electrolyze the water using the renewable energy power produced at an offshore wind farm on Jeju Island and supply hydrogen to the charging stations within Jeju Province.

This will be the largest single introduction of a MW-class PEM water electrolysis facility in Korea.

Compared to the alkaline water electrolysis method, PEM-based water electrolysis facilities feature a reduced lead time to operation and have excellent load response capability.
