‘Slow Travel’ Expected to Top Travel Trends in 2020

SEOUL, Nov. 26 (Korea Bizwire)In 2020, it is predicted that trips where people can spend their time leisurely letting their mind wander will emerge as a trend.

According to a survey of 1,190 Korean travelers conducted by the British airline ticket price comparison website Skyscanner, the most popular travel keyword for South Korean travelers is expected to be “slow travel” in 2020.

Among nine types of travel categorized by Skyscanner, “slow travel” represented the highest portion in 2019, accounting for 19.9 percent, and jumping to 31 percent for 2020 travel.

The next most popular keyword was “JOMO trips”, referring to joy of missing out travel.

JOMO refers to a type of travel that avoids destinations posted on social media and focuses on those that do not attract many tourists, and accounted for only 9 percent of searches this year, but increased to 14 percent for 2020.

Among other popular keywords were “gourmandism,” accounting for 12 percent and “sustainable travel,” trips that take the environment into consideration, accounting for 11 percent.

In particular, the growth rate of the preference for “sustainable travel” was the highest at 96 percent, either on the side of aircraft with lower carbon emissions or towards zero waste.

Demand for travel packages that maintain sustainable travel is also high around the world.

Last year, 16 percent of global air reservations were eco-friendly flights, according to Skyscanner data.

Those who said they were willing to choose sustainable travel packages such as low-carbon emission flights also rose 109 percent on-year.
