SEOUL, Dec. 10 (Korea Bizwire)South Korea’s public health agency said Sunday it plans to open a coordination office this week, supporting a global move to prevent, detect and respond to infectious diseases.

The new office, located in Osong, 108 kilometers south of Seoul, will open its doors Monday to support the activities of the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA), according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).

The GHSA is a global framework launched in 2014 to tackle global health threats, such as the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome.

The office will center on coordinating countries and organizations while also offering education and training programs as well.

“The launch of the coordination office in South Korea reflects the global community’s acknowledgment of the country’s capabilities in dealing with infectious diseases,” said Jee Young-mee, commissioner of the KDCA.

“We will spare no efforts to protect humanity from health threats,” she added.

The GHSA currently has 71 member countries, along with a total of 10 international bodies and nongovernmental organizations.
