SEOUL, Feb. 15 (Korea Bizwire)A recent study showed that teenagers that have worked at a part-time job have a higher smoking experience rate than those who have not worked at a part-time job.

A research team from the Yonsei University Graduate School of Public Health analyzed 62,276 teenagers based on data from 2017 released by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency.

Among male students, the share of those who had smoking experience stood at 19.3 percent (6,114 individuals), compared to 6.6 percent (2,036 individuals) among female students.

The share of those who had part-time job experience within the previous 12 months stood at 13.9 percent (4,379 individuals) for male students, and 13.1 percent (4,025 individuals) for female students.

Among those with part-time job experience, 2,221 or 50.9 percent of male students had smoking experience, compared to 963 or 23.9 percent of female students.

Among the students who had no part-time job experience, the share of those with smoking experience stood at 14.3 percent (2,158 individuals) for male students and 4 percent (362 individuals) for female students.

To identify the correlation between part-time job experience and smoking experience, the research team compared the smoking rate to part-time job experience by correcting demographic statistics as well as socioeconomic and smoking-related factors.

This comparison led to the conclusion that those with part-time job experience were roughly 2.5 times more likely to have smoking experience compared to those who had no part-time job experience over the previous 12 months.
