Trail Runners Flock to Jeju for Ultra Marathon

SEOUL, Oct. 5 (Korea Bizwire) The “2018 Trans Jeju Ultra Trail-Running Contest” that will see runners traverse the scenic trails of Hallasan National Park on Jeju Island will be taking place on October 20 and 21

This race is divided into three categories: 111-kilometer and 56-kilometer courses certified by the International Trail-Running Association (ITRA) and a 10-kilometer race for beginners.

The longest course spanning 111 kilometers will start at Jeju National University and continue through to Gwaneumsa Temple.

Participants will be able to hike on the trails within Hallasan National Park before returning to Jeju National Univeristy for the finish.

The cumulative elevation gain, which is indicative of the steepness of the course, is approximately 4,200 meters. Participants are required to complete the race in 30 hours.

The 56-kilometer race has a cumulative elevation gain of 2,500 meters, and participants are given 15 hours to complete the course.

Participants are expected to be equipped with water bottles, waterproof jackets, headlamps, whistles, mobile phones and snacks. Over 1,000 people including 300 foreigners are expected to take part in the race.

Trail running is a sport that is currently gaining popularity in Hong Kong, Japan, China and other parts of Asia, requiring participants to walk or run on unpaved roads such as mountains, fields and other terrain.
