SEOUL, April 30 (Korea Bizwire) — The U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) on Wednesday advised its troops and employees subscribed to SK Telecom Co. to take safety measures following a major cyberattack at South Korea’s biggest mobile carrier.
In a post titled “SK Telecom Breach Cyber Threat Advisory” updated on its website, the USFK warned of the potential impact of the hacking incident and recommended SK Telecom users to replace their universal subscriber identity module (USIM) chips and enroll in protective services to protect their personal information.
SK Telecom, which provides service to roughly half of the country’s 50 million population, detected the cyberattack on April 18 and discovered signs of a large-scale leak of customers’ USIM data.
Seoul’s defense ministry has also instructed military units to draw up measures to help soldiers replace their USIM chips and register for the mobile carrier’s protective services.
