SEOUL, Dec. 7 (Korea Bizwire)Guard rails that detect car accidents and warn approaching cars to proceed with caution, and a program that can read and analyze crime scene evidence such as footprints and tire marks were lauded as the best ideas submitted to a safety science contest organized by the government.

Eight teams each from the police and from the civilian sector received awards at a special ceremony jointly hosted by the Korean National Police Agency and the Ministry of Science and ICT on December 6.

The two standout ideas from the civilian groups were the guard rails and a crime prevention device designed in the shape of a ladybug.

When an accident occurs, the guard rails absorb the reverberations that emanate from the point of contact and the increased decibel levels, analyzing the information through big data technology. Drivers heading towards the crash site will be notified of the situation ahead by the rails and be signaled to slow down and drive carefully.

The ladybug device can be installed on walls and telephone poles in streets and alleys, where they will provide information on the closest shelters during times of emergency, in addition their core function as crime prevention devices. (Image: Korean National Police Agency)
