Whooper Swan Stays in Gangneung Past Migratory Season

GANGNEUNG, April 13 (Korea Bizwire)One of the birds from a winter migratory flock appears to have decided to stay in the east coast city of Gangneung to the concern of locals.

Swans migrate in flocks, spending the winter in South Korea before they return to the north in late February or early March.

One of the whooper swans, however, was found wandering alone in Gyeongpo Stream as of mid-April.

The endangered species had been actively engaging in feeding activities as recently as a couple of days ago. Now, however, the swan seemed to be spending most of its time sitting on top of a pile of reeds as the temperature continues to rise.

Local residents have taken interest in the swan, approaching the bird to take photos, but the swan seemed indifferent to strangers.

“The whooper swan seems to be hurt. We’ve notified the agency in charge to find out what happened exactly,” a city official said. “We only hope that the swan would safely return home, or pull through the summer here.”
