WONJU, Dec. 5 (Korea Bizwire) – Wonju is hoping to become a city of dancing by hosting a number of festivals including the University Cheerleading Championship in 2020.
The biennial University Cheerleading Championship held by the FISU (International University Sports Federation) will take place in Wonju in September 2020 as part of the Wonju Dynamic Dancing Carnival.
With the goal of becoming the Rio de Janeiro of Asia, the carnival is thought to have one of the longest parade routes in the world.
Over 500,000 people attended the 2017 Wonju Dynamic Dancing Carnival, with international teams from 13 countries performing.
In 2020, around 40 national teams are expected to join the carnival, as well as nearly 4,200 international dancers, staff members and visitors.
“The University Cheerleading Championship will help propel the Wonju Dynamic Dancing Carnival, one of the biggest dancing events in South Korea, onto the world stage,” Wonju Mayor Won Chang-mook, said during a briefing on Monday.
Won also announced plans to host other dancing events including an international Korea Open Championship sometime in 2018.
