SEOUL, June 14 (Korea Bizwire) — World Blood Donor Day is observed on June 14 to raise awareness about blood donation and thank donors. It was designated in 2004 by four organizations involved in the international blood donation movement. Major companies like Coupang, Shinhan Bank, and SK Securities participated in voluntary blood donation campaigns, while Domino’s Pizza provided free pizza to donors and Jeju Air donated support items.
Last year, Korea had a blood donation rate of 5.1%. In comparison, other countries had rates ranging from 2.7% in the UK to 7.8% in Taiwan. The largest age group of donors in Korea was individuals in their 20s. However, the number of teenage donors has declined since 2014, with only 421,886 donations last year compared to 800,321 in 2019.
