JEJU, Oct. 19 (Korea Bizwire) — New automated machines that collect recyclable goods in exchange for cash are expected to be installed in the Jeju Olle Trail to encourage visitors to take part in recycling efforts.
The machines will be installed in four different locations by the Jeju Olle Foundation that see high tourist traffic, and where plastic goods and canned products are thrown away in great numbers.
After a trial run this month, the machines are expected to be in full operation starting next month.
When a recyclable good is placed inside the machine, it is automatically separated inside the apparatus, reducing its volume to one-tenth of the original. This helps to significantly reduce recycling costs.
In exchange for their recycling efforts, users will be given “points” that can be exchanged for cash once the accumulated total reaches 2,000 points.
According to officials, one returned item will be worth 10 points, and one P.E.T. bottle equals 5 points. A single person will be able to deposit up to 20 recyclables at one time.
