SEOUL, May 17 (Korea Bizwire) — About 200 high school students had their feet washed by their teachers on May 14.
Seongji High School in Hwagok-dong, Seoul, has been holding this event where teachers wash the feet of their students as part of Korean Teacher’s Day celebrations for four years now.
There was some awkwardness at first between teachers and students, but they soon became at ease when they talked about their hobbies, studies and future plans over a washbasin.
Kim Ji-Hoo, a student of the school, said that she feels more connected with teachers. She said that she also feels sorry for them, as she is the one who should be washing their feet, celebrating Teacher’s Day.
Bae Joon-Hee, a newly appointed teacher at the school, said that she could talk about things that she and her students usually do not discuss in classrooms.
Kim Han-Tae, principal of the school, said that the event has been a recent tradition of the school, to provide opportunities for students and teachers to talk honestly.
Kim hoped that students would feel closer to their teachers through this occasion.
