CHEORWAN, Jan. 30 (Korea Bizwire) — The Cheorwon Plain in Gangwon Province, dubbed as a paradise for winter migratory birds, has recently been visited by flocks of cranes and white-naped cranes.
According to the Cheorwon Crane consultative group, more than 7,000 cranes visited the Cheorwon area this winter. It is the highest level since 2013 when statistics were first recorded.
Cheorwon County has continued its rice-straw maintenance project in the area where major migratory birds visit to protect the ecosystem of winter migratory birds, including cranes.
The project is designed to provide food and rest space for cranes by leaving about 10 to 15 centimeters of rice straw in the rice paddies after harvest.
In addition, the rice paddies, which cover an area of about 1.3 million square meters, are being created to trap water and provide a food source to the cranes, becoming a habitat for worms and fish.
Choi Jong-soo, vice chairman of the consultative group, said, “The results of local farms’ efforts to coexist with cranes for more than a decade have been bearing fruit recently.”
