SEOUL, Aug. 13 (Korea Bizwire) – The Ministry of Environment and the National Institute of Biological Resources jointly announced that they had discovered five new species found for the first time in the world on Dokdo. According to research on native plants and animals conducted by the institute since 2013, it has found a total of 1,576 different species of plant and animal life on Korea’s easternmost island.
The new species found on Dokdo include two copepods and three gastrotriches, and the institute plans to create scientific names for the newly found species indicating that they originate in Dokdo. In 2005, the institute created the scientific names of Dokdonia donghaensis and Virgibacillus dokdonensis for two microbes found on Dokdo.
