SEOUL, Jan. 2 (Korea Bizwire)The Ministry of Environment has distributed an educational and experience program manual for the exhibition of animals at zoos to municipal governments and zoos across the country.

The exemplary cases of the manual indicate that the programs should be halted if visitors do not comply with control or if the health of animals worsens.

In addition, behavioral enrichment programs that meet the characteristics of the animals being exhibited should be implemented.

The Act on Management of Zoos and Aquariums that was amended last year prohibits zoos from permitting visitors to ride, touch or feed animals that are banned under presidential decrees since they could inflict pain, fear or stress on animals.

If the amendment takes effect, the zoos and aquariums that perform the prohibited behaviors will be fined up to 5 million won (US$3,960).

In addition, the ministry also recommended selecting and limiting the food depending on the health of the animals, giving enough rest time to animals in case of feeding or touching programs, and limiting the experience of riding only to livestock or pseudo livestock animals.
