SEOUL, Korea, Sep 16 (Korea Bizwire) – How many cups of coffee a day is just right for you? This is a question you have asked so many times and health professionals all around the world have tried to answer to no avail. It is not so easy for anyone to count her caffeine intake whenever she drinks her java, either.
Although many of us associate caffeine readily with coffee, it is contained in several other drinks such as Coke, hot chocolate, energy drink, and even green tea. According to Ministry of Food and Drug Safety recommendations, the daily caffeine intake must not exceed 400 milligrams for adults. The maximum intake for pregnant women is 300 mg while that for children is 2.5 mg per kilogram of body weight.
The caffeine content of a can of ready-to-drink coffee is 74 mg while that for a cup of instant coffee (a 12-gram pack) is 69 mg. A cup of green tea contains 15 mg of caffeine. A 250-milliliter can of Coke has 23 mg of caffeine, too.
Of course, caffeine is often beneficial for us. As we all know, coffee is a great way to wake up in the morning. Some coffee connoisseurs go so far as to suggest that the modern civilization wouldn’t have been possible without coffee drinking culture. But too much caffeine causes insomnia, restlessness, nausea, and indigestion.
Since early this year, the ministry has recommended liquid-type drink products (those containing more than 0.15 mg of caffeine per every 1 milliliter) to indicate “contains a high dose of caffeine” on their label with appropriate warnings.
