SEOUL, April 19 (Korea Bizwire) — Hyundai Mobis Co., the auto parts making unit of Hyundai Motor Group, said Monday that its in-house brainwave-based driver monitoring system can reduce the risk of drowsy driving by up to one-third.
The system, called M.Brain, is a wearable earset that monitors and analyzes drivers’ brain signals in real time.
In collaboration with the Gyeonggi Research Institute, the company has analyzed the actual effect of the system through a pilot project on public buses in Gyeonggi Province over the past year.
The analysis showed that the drivers using M.Brain saw the risk of careless driving during after-meal hours, the time when drowsy driving occurs most frequently, fall by up to 30 percent.
Even on highways where drowsy driving can lead to multi-car crashes, M.Brain helped reduce the risk of careless driving by about 20 percent.
By sounding an alarm through the speakers and vibrating the seat when careless driving was detected in real time, the system helped drivers recover attention within 2.3 seconds.
This is about three times faster than the 6.7 seconds that the drivers without M.Brain needed to recover attention.
