SEOUL, April 21 (Korea Bizwire) — The interest in whisky and distilled soju is growing, with a focus on those in their 20s and 30s.
According to discount store chain Homeplus, sales of whisky generated by those in their 20s and 30s between January 1 and April 9 jumped by 52 percent compared to the same period a year earlier.
During the same period, sales of distilled soju rose by 58 percent year on year.
Homeplus suggested that in contrast to the past, when premium soju was favored mainly by middle-aged consumers, its customer base is now expanding to include those in their 20s and 30s.
This growth is driven by the increasing interest in Korean-style distilled alcohols, which is gaining momentum due to the recent whisky fever.
Among the customers who purchased premium soju through a membership service that Homeplus launched in January to secure regular customers for alcoholic beverages, 39 percent were in their 20s and 30s.
