SEOUL, July 12 (Korea Bizwire) — Military blankets, regarded as one of the most essential emergency items in the military, are disappearing from the South Korean Army and the Marine Corps.
The Ministry of Defense announced plans to replace military blankets at every Army and Marines unit with commercial ones later this year.
The Air Force and the Navy discontinued the use of military blankets in 1974 and 1999, respectively.
The Army and the Marine Corps, however, continued to use military blankets due to various missions that involve camping outdoors.
The decision to replace military blankets comes after criticism that the blankets can’t be washed frequently due to the military environment, undermining efforts to ensure a good sleeping environment for service members.
