SEOUL, July 8 (Korea Bizwire) – It was recently reported that more than 30 percent of the male population over 20 goes drinking at least 2 to 3 times every week.
According to the Food Consumption Behavior Investigation of 2014 conducted by the Korea Rural Economic Institute, among 2,789 adult males from 2,334 households nationwide, 31.2% drank more than 2 to 3 times a week.
While the population ‘drinking 2 to 3 times a week’ was the highest by 13.4%, those who drank 4 to 5 times a week added up to 3.3%, with an additional 2.1% reporting that they drank every day.
This means that 35.8% percent of adult males do not drink at all.
Among 3,522 adult females, those who drank accounted for about 20% of the respondents. The number of female drinkers who drank once a week was the highest by 9.9%, while 5.2% drank 2 to 3 times a week, 0.7% drank 4 to 5 times a week, and only 0.3% drank every day.
Both male and female drinkers tended to drink more when they were younger and had higher education.
The highest monthly income among those who drank an average of 1 to 3 times a week was around 5 million won (35.5%).
Alcohol preferences were also ranked. Soju (58.6%) was the most popular, followed by beer (32.4%), makgeolli (4.5%) and wine (2.8%).
