Record Imports of Decaf Coffee Last Year: Data

SEOUL, May 2 (Korea Bizwire)Decaffeinated coffee is gaining popularity with the increasing focus on healthy consumption trends.

According to data from the Korea Customs Service, imports of decaffeinated coffee reached 6,933 tons last year, which is a 45.8 percent increase from the previous year.

Since 2017, imports have increased for six consecutive years, setting new records every year from 2018 onwards.

Last year’s imports of decaffeinated coffee reached US$71.9 million, which is 55.1 percent higher than the previous year.

In the past, decaffeinated coffee was mostly for consumers who were sensitive to caffeine, such as pregnant women.

However, now, even consumers who are not averse to caffeine are looking for decaffeinated coffee as it is becoming a new trend in healthy consumption.

In 2017, Starbucks Coffee Korea introduced its first decaffeinated drink, which sold more than 10 million cups in the first 12 months.

Decaffeinated drinks have been showing an average growth rate of 20 percent on an annual basis.
