NONSAN, South Korea, Sept. 26 (Korea Bizwire) – If King Leonidas I had 300 Spartans to defend against the Persians, General Gyebaek had 5,000 warriors for the legendary Battle of Hwangsanbeol.
Among the last stand battles fought by Baekje against Silla during the time of the Three Kingdoms, General Gyebaek of Baekje Kingdom fought against 50,000 Silla troops with 5,000 men. Although Gyebaek triumphed with four major defeats in early battles, Silla ultimately prevailed, leading to the fall of the Baekje Dynasty.
A reenactment of the battle took place Sunday in Nonsan, with some 400 actors and stunt performers depicting the fierce battle. It was arranged as a part of the 62nd Baekje Cultural Festival which began on September 23.
Taking place in cities and counties across South Chungcheong Province, the festival continues until October 2.
