SEOUL, Jan. 16 (Korea Bizwire) — Starbucks Korea is set to implement an eco-friendly initiative that rewards customers using their personal cups with unique Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs).

Starting from January 16, Starbucks Rewards members who accomplish the eco stamp collection mission by using their own cups will receive Starbucks-branded NFTs.

Customers can collect up to three eco stamps per day, which can be exchanged for NFTs. According to Starbucks, these NFTs are designed with the concept of ‘a cup like no other in the world’, featuring a variety of images based on cups and tumblers.

This move marks the first time Starbucks is issuing NFTs in Asia. NFTs are virtual tokens created using blockchain technology, which assigns a unique and tamper-proof address to a digital file. As digital assets, they can prove ownership and are used in various fields including art, music, and video.

The initiative aims to encourage the use of personal cups by customers. The number of personal cup uses at Starbucks has been sharply increasing each year: from 17.39 million in 2020, to 21.9 million in 2021, and 25.3 million in 2022. Last year, the usage hit a record high of 29.4 million.

This eco-friendly project is a part of Starbucks Korea’s effort to promote sustainability and engage customers in environmental conservation while offering them a unique and modern reward in the form of NFTs.
