SEOUL, Apr. 24 (Korea Bizwire) – More than 9 out of 10 users of KakaoPay, a popular mobile payment service in South Korea, believe that married couples should share at least a portion of their assets, according to a recent poll conducted by the company.

KakaoPay revealed on April 23 the results of a survey conducted from April 15 to 18, in which 42,435 participants responded. The poll, conducted through the company’s “PayNews” service that provides financial, investment, and real estate content, asked, “To what extent should married couples share their assets?”

Approximately 47% of respondents answered that “it’s better to share everything,” while 45.7% chose “it’s acceptable to share only a portion.” A mere 7% said that “couples don’t need to share assets at all.”

Across age groups, the preference for sharing all assets was prevalent. Among respondents in their 60s, 50.2% favored complete asset sharing, followed by 50.4% in their 30s, 50% in their 20s, and 47% in their 50s.

However, those in their 40s demonstrated a stronger inclination toward partial asset sharing, with 47.7% preferring this option and 44.7% opting for full sharing. Notably, the 40s age group had the highest percentage (7.6%) of respondents who believed that couples “don’t need to share assets at all.”

The 20s age group exhibited the lowest proportion of respondents (6%) who felt that asset sharing was unnecessary, with 50% favoring complete sharing and 44% preferring partial sharing.

When analyzed by gender, a higher percentage of men (9%) than women (5.5%) indicated that couples “don’t need to share assets at all.” However, the proportions of men (48.3%) and women (48.2%) who believed in complete asset sharing were similar.

KakaoPay stated that it offers a Joint Asset Management service to cater to users who recognize the need for shared asset management. This service allows couples and families to conveniently share selected asset categories, such as monthly living expenses, joint savings, and shared loans, without the hassle of capturing and sharing transaction details or downloading Excel files.

“As the survey results indicate, most users believe that couples should share at least a portion of their assets,” KakaoPay said.

“However, the burden of fully disclosing all assets and the cumbersome process often pose significant barriers. With this in mind, we offer the Joint Asset Management service and plan to enhance it further with additional features, enabling comprehensive asset management for economic units like couples and families.”
