SEOUL, Dec. 4 (Korea Bizwire) — The unification ministry said Wednesday it will focus on stably managing the situation with North Korea while adhering to its principle-based policy toward Pyongyang, following the short-lived declaration of martial law.
The ministry released the statement after a meeting of senior officials, presided over by Unification Minister Kim Yung-ho, following President Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration of martial law the previous night, which was lifted hours later after the National Assembly voted to reject it.
During the meeting, officials reviewed the situation with North Korea and discussed the direction of future policies on unification and Pyongyang, the ministry said.
The ministry noted that it “will concentrate on the stable management of the situation on the Korean Peninsula while adhering to its principle-based North Korea policy.”
The minister also canceled his public appearance at an event organized by the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council later in the day. Vice Unification Minister Kim Soo-kyung canceled her scheduled attendance at a luncheon with ambassadors from member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
