VIP Rooms at Incheon Airport Empty as Pandemic Drags On

YEONGJONG ISLAND, Sept. 13 (Korea Bizwire)VIP rooms at Incheon International Airport have all but been abandoned as COVID-19 continues to put severe constraints on overseas travel.

The Incheon International Airport Corp. reported that the VIP rooms at the airport were used only 170 times between January and August this year. With a monthly average of 21.3 times, the usage rate plunged from a monthly average of 183.8 times in 2019.

Half of all use of the VIP rooms (83 times, 48.8 percent) involved visits by foreign ministers, heads of public agencies, and international organizations invited by the South Korean foreign minister.

There are currently six VIP rooms on the third floor of the airport’s Terminal 1 and four rooms on the third floor of Terminal 2.

In accordance with the VIP regulations at the airport, VIP rooms can be used only by the incumbent or former presidents, the five heads of constitutional agencies, parliamentary negotiation body representatives, and foreign ministers.

High-ranking public officials of ministerial-level or higher, members of the National Assembly and religious leaders can also use the VIP room in-between travels.
