Gangwon Province, South Korea, Jul. 12 (Korea Bizwire) — Amid a sweltering heat wave and the torrential rain of the monsoon season, one South Korean army base is being resourceful in tackling the elements by introducing disposable lunch boxes.
The single-use lunchboxes adopted by the 7th Infantry Division, a military formation of the Republic of Korea Army, are setting a precedent as their use could solve a number of food issues facing the military during the summer, which could help save time and better manage food waste.
In the past, lunch meals were served at most South Korean army bases through food trucks, which travel to areas where training exercises are taking place.
When trucks arrive, regardless of the weather and location, soldiers typically have to wait in line for a long time, prolonging the process, and draining their energy.
With the new method of food distribution however, military personnel will be given some spare time during their lunch break to rest and recharge, raising morale and productivity.
An estimated 50,000 won per meal was spent to provide lunch containers for every soldier.
“We implemented the change with the idea that we want to provide warm meals for soldiers so as to raise morale and hope other bases will follow suit,” a military official said.
