ULLEUNG, Sept. 13 (Korea Bizwire) —“Dragons Up to the Sky” Waterspouts Phenomenon, named for its resemblance to a dragon soaring into the sky, was observed in the sea near Ulleung, Gyeongbuk, on Wednesday.
Similar to tornadoes, which are common in North America, the tall waterspout phenomenon is also known as a mesocyclone.
It is said to form when cold air from the upper atmosphere intersects with warm air from the ocean. On September 13, at around 9:30 a.m., several occurred in the sea southeast of Ulleung, and the waterspout phenomenon was also seen at Homigot in Pohang.
This Korean version of tornadoes is comprised of giant whirlwinds that occur when the atmospheric layer is unstable.
