SEOUL, May 30 (Korea Bizwire) – A recent study has revealed that children who use smartphones from an early age have a higher chance of developing depression, anxiety and aggression.

Researcher Kim Su-jung and professor Jung Ik-joong of Ewha Womans University revealed the findings in a thesis titled, ‘The Effects of Computer and Video Games and Smartphones on Children’s Depression, Anxiety, and Aggression’.

The team found that children who are exposed to smartphones at an earlier age have a higher frequency of depression and anxiety, as well as stronger aggression. In contrast, the early use of computer and video games had no significant impact on children’s depression, anxiety, and aggression.

More frequent use of smartphones also contributed to higher level of depression, anxiety and aggression. Again, the frequency of use of computer and video games had no significant impact.

“We believe that children’s exposure to computer and video games did not have a significant impact because a smartphone can function as both a computer and gaming device,” said the team. “Many parents offer smartphones to their children as a way to distract them.”

“There’s a clear educational need for parents to be aware of the potential harm that exposure to smartphones can have on young children,” it added.
