Gov’t’s School Digital Infrastructure Project Ahead of Schedule

SEOUL, July 9 (Korea Bizwire)High-speed gigabit Wi-Fi networks had been installed in 310,000 elementary, middle and high school classrooms across the country, and 250,000 laptops and desktop PCs had been provided to teaching faculties as of the end of last month, according to government officials.

Since July 2020, the Ministry of Education has been engaged in a digital infrastructure project with a focus on establishing Wi-Fi networks and replacing obsolete computers at schools.

As of the end of June, Wi-Fi networks were installed in 230,000 classrooms, a number equivalent to 94 percent of the general classrooms at all of the nation’s elementary, middle and high schools.

Including special classrooms, libraries and student hobby clubs, Wi-Fi networks were installed in a total of 310,000 rooms, equivalent to 79 percent of all of the classrooms in the country.

The government earmarked 384.7 billion won (US$335 million) to build school Wi-Fi networks and 221.5 billion won for the replacement of obsolete PCs for teaching faculty.

The ministry plans to complete the rollout of gigabit Wi-Fi networks for all of the nation’s 387,000 elementary, middle and high school classrooms by the second semester of this year, one year earlier than originally scheduled.
