HWASEONG, March 11 (Korea Bizwire) — Gyeonggi Province is opening a new protection facility where abandoned cats will be brought in and sent out for free adoption.
The province held a ceremony for construction of a new cat adoption center in Hwaseong on Tuesday.
The center will be in charge of the protection and adoption of cats.
The province will invest 8.9 billion won (US$7.8 million) to build a one-story building on 47,419 square meters of land, with a total surface area of 1,406 square meters, aiming for completion by December.
The building will be designed in the shape of a cat, comprising protection facilities, veterinarian clinics, consultation rooms for adoption, and quarantine facilities.
The building’s design also reflects the ecological traits of cats, which are territorial in nature and enjoy sunlight.

The center will be in charge of bringing in abandoned cats from other animal protection facilities that are more than two months old and soon to be euthanized, to carry out health checks, vaccinations, and neutering before sending them out for free adoption.
The center will offer orientation to adopting families on how to take care of cats, and provide six months of consultations on behavioral and health inquiries for successful cat rearing.
“Only by respecting the lives of animals can we be respected for our lives,” said Gyeonggi Province Gov. Lee Jae-myung. “The center is built with the purpose of settling just protection and adoption practices in civil society.”
