Goheung, Korea, August 05 (Korea Biz Wire) – Hansung Food, the leading Korean exporter specializing in various teas, has been certified as a halal food supplier. The company recently announced that it received the halal certification for four of its products, including citron tea, jujube tea, ginger tea, and aloe tea, from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim).
Certification of ‘halal,’ the Islamic word for ‘allowed’, is necessary for companies to export food or cosmetic items to Islamic countries. Objects or behaviors prohibited under Islamic law are called ‘haram,’ or ‘forbidden,’ and if any instance of ‘haram’ occurs in the manufacturing and processing of goods it will not be awarded ‘halal.’ A thorough inspection beginning with raw materials must be done in order for a product to be awarded the ‘halal’ certification.
The ‘halal’ certification acquired by Hansung Food is valuable because the certification process was started at the request of actual Muslim buyers. Kim Jong-nam, CEO of Hansung Food, stated, “With our certification, we will officially begin exporting to the Muslim market which accounts for approximately 20 percent, or $650 billion, of the global food market. Furthermore, we will not be content with the new Middle East market, but hopefully be able to expand globally to include wherever Muslim consumers reside, be it Asia, Europe, or the Americas.”
