SEOUL, Dec. 31 (Korea Bizwire) — Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation announced on December 30 the launch of their Integrated Global Information System (IGIS), marking a significant advancement in their carbon emissions management capabilities.

The newly developed IGIS represents a comprehensive approach to tracking carbon emissions throughout a vehicle’s entire life cycle, from raw material extraction to manufacturing, transportation, operation, and disposal. The system integrates previously separate monitoring tools while adding new functionality for systematic product-level emissions calculations.

Prior to IGIS, the automakers had been using multiple systems, including the Global Energy Monitoring System (GEMS) and Supply Chain Emissions Management System (SCEMS), to track carbon emissions across their global operations and supplier network.

IGIS stands out for its incorporation of a “complete vehicle life cycle assessment” feature, enabling both vehicle-specific and corporate-level carbon emissions calculations. While most automotive manufacturers currently monitor emissions from parts manufacturing and facility operations, calculating product-level carbon footprints typically required separate systems.

The new life cycle assessment capability allows for more systematic emissions management through quantitative data collection at each stage. The consolidated platform also improves operational efficiency by streamlining what was previously a complex system requiring multiple departments to use separate monitoring tools.

To ensure data integrity, Hyundai and Kia have implemented blockchain technology in IGIS, enhancing the transparency of emissions reporting.

“We developed IGIS with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2045,” said Jin Eun-sook, executive vice president and head of the ICT Innovation Division at Hyundai Motor Group. “Through systematic management, we aim to reduce carbon emissions across all aspects of Hyundai and Kia’s economic activities.”
