Korean Air Inks 100 bln Won Deal with Airbus

SEOUL, Apr. 23 (Korea Bizwire)South Korea’s top carrier Korean Air Line Co. said Thursday it has clinched an exclusive deal worth 100 billion won (US$92.33 million) with Airbus to supply aircraft parts for the European firm’s new jet airliner.

With the latest contract, Korean Air will deliver sharklets, specialized winglets attached to the tip of an aircraft’s wings, for the A330 New Engine Option twin-engine jet currently under development by Airbus, the South Korean company said in a press release.

Korean Air will take part in both designing and developing the aircraft parts, which are necessary to help lower wind drag and reduce fuel efficiency, according to the company. Manufacturing will take place in the southeastern port city of Busan, starting 2016.

Korean Air has been supplying some 2,200 units of sharklets to Airbus since 2009 and has also been developing cargo doors for the Airbus A350 since 2008, the air carrier said.
