KTA Uses Friendly Webtoon Characters to Prevent Juvenile Smoking

SEOUL, Dec.2 (Korea Bizwire)The Korea Tobacco Association (KTA) announced that it will start a campaign to prevent smoking among teenagers with students from ‘The School to help you Grow, Byeol’ and popular webtoonist Jeon Sun-wook, famous for his webtoon ‘Free draw’ on Naver.

The KTA will distribute sticker boards featuring the the hero of ‘Free draw’ saying ‘It is illegal to sell cigarettes to teens and for teens to buy cigarettes’ to convenience stores across the country.

According to the revised Juvenile Protection Act, all stores that sell cigarettes have to put up a sign saying they do not sell cigarettes to teenagers. Any store that violates the rule will be fined three million won.

The KTA conducted a campaign with the students from ‘The School to help you Grow, Byeol’, distributing smoking prevention sticker boards and advertising the benefits of smoke-free lifestyle at areas near Hongik University.

Webtoonist Jeon Sun-wook commented that he participated in the project since his webtoon ‘Freedraw’ is popular among teens, and he felt could influence teenagers through characters that are familiar to them.

KTA started its campaign to prevent juvenile smoking in 1998, and they are now in their 17th year.
