SEOUL, Korea, Feb 28 (Korea Bizwire) – More than half of Koreans in their 20s and 30s who are students or office workers frequently skip their breakfast or do not have it regularly, according to a recent survey.

The survey conducted by Morning Jook, a breakfast brand, by asking 1,000 young adults in their 20s and 30s showed that 51.9 percent of them do not have breakfast regularly. Especially, 45.5 percent replied that they skip breakfast or have it only once or twice a week.

Compared with a government report that 20.3 percent of Koreans in all age groups skip breakfast in 2011, the figure is much higher than among average Koreans.

The main reasons for their skipping breakfast are “busy or in hurry for work or school in the morning” (34.2%), “to have more sleep” (31.5%), “not worth it” (15.2%) and “skipping became a habit” (15.2%).

According to the Huffington Post, an American online news aggregator, people not having breakfast regularly tend to have slower brain activity and have 4.5-folds more chances of obesity. Also, it could result in various diseases like diabetes and heart-related conditions.

To take advantage of the trend, lots of food companies are releasing product lines that can be easily cooked and simply consumed for those who are short of time, especially in the busy morning.

Cheongjeongwon provides four frozen fried rice products which can be served as a meal taking just a few minutes to prepare in the microwave oven. It released seven different kinds of instant gukbab, rice with soup.

Also, tofu or bean curd which is soft to eat and can be easily digested is popular for a substitute for breakfast. Daesang recently rolled out a bean curd brand that contains sweet blueberry jam and other fruits to add more taste to it.

Meanwhile, coffee chains are offering new menus that can substitute a meal with enough nutrition value targeting customers enjoying morning coffee to wake themselves up.

A marketing official at a coffee chain said, “Now, our business offers a variety of menus which can be consumed instantly besides bakery products. Considering busy consumers who want simple and but nutritious breakfast, the popularity of meal substitute product will keep on.”
