SEOUL, Feb. 23 (Korea Bizwire) — SK Materials Co., a semiconductor and display material unit under SK Group, has teamed up with U.S. oil major Exxon Mobil Corp. to step into the blue ammonia market.
The two parties announced on Wednesday that they had signed an agreement to mass-produce and import blue ammonia using next-generation carbon capture technologies.
Blue ammonia is produced using blue hydrogen as a raw material that is made by removing carbon dioxide, thus generating only a negligible amount of carbon emissions during combustion.
For dual-fuel power generation that uses both blue ammonia and coal, it can reduce carbon emissions in direct proportion to the amount of blue ammonia used.
Exxon Mobil plans to set up a blue ammonia production facility in the city of Baytown in Texas.
SK Materials plans to import and use blue ammonia as a fuel for power generation at a time when dual-fuel power generation becomes possible in the domestic market.
In addition, it will expand the area of cooperation with Exxon Mobil to develop carbon-reduction solutions ventures on a mid and long-term basis.
