DAEJEON, Aug. 10 (Korea Bizwire) – The Korea Forest Service has designated the Hovenia dulcis, commonly known as the Japanese raisin tree, as August’s “Forest Product of the Month,” citing its exceptional liver-detoxifying properties, officials announced on August 9.
The Hovenia dulcis contains bioactive compounds called ampelopsin, which are known for their effectiveness in preventing alcohol-induced liver damage. These properties have made the tree a popular ingredient in hangover remedies in South Korea.
Beyond its liver-protective qualities, the tree also contains antioxidants such as quercetin and kaempferol, which may help alleviate symptoms of arthritis and muscle pain.
The versatility of Hovenia dulcis extends to its culinary applications. Its leaves can be briefly blanched and used in wrapped dishes or pickled. The fruit can be fermented to produce traditional liquor or vinegar, and its natural sweetness makes it a potential sugar substitute.
Interestingly, the Hovenia dulcis also plays a significant role in apiculture. Known as an excellent honey plant, it produces more nectar than the black locust tree, a well-known source of honey. The resulting honey is rich in minerals and offers various medicinal benefits.
Lim Sang-seop, head of the Korea Forest Service, emphasized the tree’s multifaceted uses. “From its wood to its fruit, every part of the Hovenia dulcis can be utilized,” he said. “We encourage people to try a daily cup of Hovenia dulcis tea to support liver health and experience the natural benefits it offers.”
