SEOUL, Jul. 18 (Korea Bizwire) – The use of energy storage systems (ESS) to better manage energy increased significantly in the first half of the year, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE).
The use of ESS, which store energy during hours when much electricity supply exceeds demand, increased 20-fold compared to the same period last year.
The stored energy is then consumed when there is demand. The MOTIE says 1.8 GWh of energy went through ESS, which was more than the total supply of electricity over the past six years (1.1 GWh).
Of note, the ESS supply linked to renewable energy increased 16 times to stand at 638 MWh.
Because the amount of electricity sourced from solar and wind energy plants is not always predictable, ESS are often linked to renewable energy facilities to even out the difference.
The MOTIE says that the increase in electrical supply via ESS is closely connected to the expansion of renewable energy.
