SEOUL, March 13 (Korea Bizwire)The Vietnamese version of the 2011 South Korean box office sensation “Sunny” topped the Southeast Asian country’s box office in its opening weekend, the movie’s overseas distributor said Tuesday.

Released on Friday, the new film, titled “Go Go Sisters,” collected 490,000 views in its first weekend, more than double the number of the Vietnamese remake of the Korean film “Miss Granny.”

“Go Go Sisters” is the Vietnamese version of “Sunny,” which attracted 7.45 million viewers in South Korea during its theatrical run in 2011. It is the first title from CJ HK Entertainment, a joint venture between South Korea’s media and entertainment company CJ E&M and the Vietnamese studio HK Film.

“The movie seems to have won the hearts of the Vietnamese people, who love comedy and music, by combining comical characters with Vietnam’s famous old songs, and the trends of the ’70s, on top of the tight story from the original version,” Jung Tae-sun, head of the CJ HK Entertainment, said in a press release.

“Sunny” will also be made into Japanese and American versions. The Japanese remake is set to open on Aug. 31, while the screenplay for the American version is being written with a Hollywood studio, according to CJ E&M.
